Review: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Title: Ready Player One

Author: Ernest Cline

Purchase: Available in the UK and the US.

Overall Rating: 5/5

Great For: Fans of Sci-Fi and Video Games

Themes: Science Fiction, Adventure, Video Games

I know that I have already written a review on this book in the past, but I really think it deserves to be in the limelight again, especially before it is made into a film by Steven Spielberg!

Review: Here comes a review of my all time favourite book that I discovered in 2011. It was so incredible and took me on a complete adventure that I have reread it over and over ever since, then thought ‘Hey, why not give it some love and write a review?!’

Player Begin.
This book is set in a dystopian and corrupt world, so corrupt that the human population live their lives through the world of Virtual Reality headsets. They go to school, go to work, creating a living, hang out with friends, all through a VR headset.

Where did this VR Headset come from? How did it get created?
There was a man who is seen as such an inspiration that created this world to make life worth living, a life that still had opportunity and hope. Although, once the creator died he broadcast a video to the whole VR world publicising that he had created a game, a puzzle within the VR world. The people of this world have to find a clue to start the game, complete each level and defeat several bosses. If they succeed, then the winner will gain the creators life time’s earnings.

I feel like I really should not say any more about this storyline as it immediately drags you in. Not forgetting that Steven Spielberg is currently making a film adaptation of this book. The book is full of classic video game, Star Wars and other Science Fiction quotes throughout too..

There are not enough words that I can say about this book, it is just outstanding and is so fast-paced that you will not want to put it down!

GAME OVER.

Unravel Trial

I have finally played the Unravel trial on my Xbox One. I was waiting quite a while for this adorable platform game to come out and it did not disappoint at all!

The aim of the game is that there’s this little character made out of Yarn, and when he’s going through the levels he can sometimes run out of yarn and become thinner, restricting movement. So, you have to collect more on your way through the levels otherwise you cannot get any further.

It is such an adorable game and I am completely blown away by the art and animation that has gone into this game. It is just so beautiful and seems to really come to life!

Disney Infinity 3.0 Review

Do you want a game that you can play as several different Disney and Pixar characters, complete levels or do whatever you want? Then Disney Infinity is a great choice!
I was humming and aahing for ages about Disney Infinity.. I really wanted to purchase it, but not for the scary price tag. Luckily since Christmas time, it has gone down in price and a lovely friend of mine ended up getting it for me as he knew I kept wanting it!

You get a portal, that you can put the characters that you want to play as on and they’ll appear on the screen, and then you can place more things down like playset pieces (that are playable levels based around a certain Disney film) and other boosting items (that will improve your health, give you game expansions..)
So, on Disney Infinity there are two choices. You can either play the ‘Playset’ mode or ‘Toy Box’ mode – Playset mode is when you play the levels from the playset that you have on your portal and Toy Box mode is where you can roam the world and do whatever you want, play as any character and combine worlds together (so you can have Olaf inside Star Wars, or Mater inside Aladdin).

I feel like this game is such a great choice, although it can be pricey and this was my only downfall about the game! When you buy a start pack, it comes with the portal, the video game, two characters (the newest one is Star Wars) and a playset piece so you can play the Star Wars levels (not The Force Awakens or the original trilogy).

If you want to play as another character in the game, you need to purchase a character from an actual shop. These characters usually range from £9.99-£14.99 by themselves, baring in mind this doesn’t give you any new levels in the game, you can only play as that character in the Toy Box. If you want different levels, you can purchase a ‘Play Set’ around £24.99-29.99 which gives you two characters from the same film and the level will be based on that film (for example, Inside Out level pack comes with Anger and Joy, and then the playset piece to give you the Inside Out levels in the game!).
Beware, your child might want more and more characters and this can get pricey! But this is definitely a great game anyway.

For me personally, I prefer playing the Toy Box mode as you can do whatever you want to. You can build a house for all of your Disney friends (they have really cute little characters that run around now, and Funko have released what I believe to be the same characters called ‘Dorbz’), you can farm, you can fight, learn to drive vehicles, create new worlds and visit other people’s created worlds from around the world..
Infinity-3

There’s so much to do on Disney Infinity and I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing it! I cannot get enough of it yet!
There are also the expansions too, such as ‘Toy Box Speedway’ that turns Disney infinity into a racing game and ‘Toy Box Takeover’ that has more adventure with villains!

Disney-Infinity-3-Toy-Box-Expansion-Game-Pieces

I would highly recommend this game, for the Disney and Star Wars fans in the family. You’ll get hours of fun out of this game and they have recently released The Force Awakens playset too, which looks incredible!
That’s about it that I have to say about Disney Infinity for now – I will probably write some updates on how I am going with this game, what I have created and so on..
So keep your eyes peeled!

Xbox 360: Disneyland Adventures (Kinect)

Can I point out how much of an underrated game this is? This is one of my all time favourite games for the Xbox 360 and I always highly recommend it to families that love Disney.
If you’re a huge Disney parks and film freak like me, then this is the ultimate video game for you. No joke.
You use to Kinect (which is a camera for your Xbox 360 that detects your body, so you can control the game by using your hands, arms, jumping, dancing, ducking down..)
You get to walk/run around Disneyland, hug the characters, collect autographs from all of them, ride the rides (most of them have a level built into these, so you have to jump over obstacles, duck under things, move left and right to avoid stuff) and you can do whatever you like! Not to mention, that there’s also Hidden Mickeys in this game. Snap the camera out and away you go!

09

I really have no idea how this game wasn’t more popular? I have had this game for 3/4 years now and I still absolutely love it. There’s so much to the game and I have only completed about 50% of the achievements and I have been on here for hours!

My only problem that yes, it’s a Kinect game but I get so addicted to playing this game that my arms are in agony from all of the hours that I am playing it! You need to lift your arm and move it left and right to walk, and I am aching the next day but really feel the need and addiction to carry on collecting autographs and hidden mickeys! That is a sacrifice I am willing to take!

maxresdefault

Have you played this? I’m so sad that this isn’t going to be reverse compatible with the new Kinect for the Xbox One but this is a game that makes me want to keep my Xbox 360 in the works!

Lego Jurassic World Game Review (Xbox One)

As I work at a Video Game Retailer, I thought ‘Why don’t I post reviews about some Video Games that I have played?’ – so here goes nothing!

I bought my Xbox One in October when I came back from travelling and a must have game for me had to be Lego Jurassic World. I absolutely love the Lego Games as they are playable for all ages, have a wide target audience for their humour and they are just overall, great games!

So, I have previously owned Lego Indiana Jones, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Hobbit, Lord Of The Rings and Marvel Super Heroes – and I still think that Lego Jurassic World is still up there with some of the best Lego Games made!

Yes, it is great for children anyway but it is also great for the older audience that grew up with the Jurassic Park movies as this game features the original trilogy and the latest Jurassic World. You can play every single film and it is a decent length game too!
You can build the vehicles and dinosaurs from every single film, and also use these within the game – to completely races, levels, you name it..

They have a lot of humour and puns in here for the parents, the older fans, the children and even the grandparents. It is a lighthearted game, that although it has dinosaurs that usually eat people and animals, in the Lego Games they do not show any of this and they always add a cheeky spin onto it (as my mother pointed out whilst I was playing it).

I would highly recommend this game to everyone, and I feel that it is one of the best selling games at our store since October! Look out for Lego The Avengers coming out at the end of January – it looks like it is going to be great too!

Have any of you played this game?
What is your favourite Lego Video Game? I would LOVE to know about this!

Sexism. Why is it seen as right?

You know what’s annoying me? People being sexist. Towards me, towards my friends, towards anyone.
I work in video game retail and I get comments or remarks about being a female. Sometimes they aren’t nasty comments or aren’t suppose to come across in a certain way, but they do.

‘Oh, you work in a video game store?’

‘It’s nice to see women working here, too’. – I know that this was meant as a good thing and almost a compliment as the customer said that seeing a female is more approachable and comfortable for her. I understand that completely, that’s great to hear but why should it even need to be said in the first place?  There should never even be that barrier or have to cross someone’s mind?

‘You play video games?’ – men will often ask you this, and seem very shocked at the fact that women actually play video games. This is the 21st century, it’s nothing new and there’s no rules on who can and can’t play! Or I even get the ‘I didn’t expect you to be a gamer’ or ‘I didnt think you looked like a gamer’ – why not? Why do I have to look a certain way to be able to play them? Do I even need to look a certain way? No. It’s just that sadly, that’s how society is wired to think half of the time!

The other thing that can be irritating, is that I work with the majority of men. So yes, we all have a joke and a laugh about each other but then there’s that line of what you can say to each other. I had the comment ‘Yes, I’m a male. I can do exactly what you do, and much much MUCH more..’ – and that really annoyed me. I know it wasn’t said seriously, it was part joke but the fact that someone even thinks that in the first place.. And this was said in front of several customers, which was really embarrassing for me. You could see the look on their faces too, some were slightly horrified at what was said and others just laughed it off as a joke. It shouldn’t be a joke in the first place.

In fact, I can do exactly what you do, no matter what and nothing is stopping me. Why should someone be seen as inferior just because of their gender? Or even whilst on the case, by someone’s race or sexuality? Oh, I’m smaller, lighter and maybe physically weaker than you? That doesn’t meant that I cannot do anything that you can.

It’s like, I use to do kickboxing years ago but still, men don’t really take you seriously if you say that to them. Why not? Women can be just as strong, there’s so many women that give the men a run for their money.

I am not usually someone that goes on and on about equality, sexism, how others are treated.. I usually keep it to myself, but recently I have had to vent about it. I do not stand for any crap from people, I will not let someone talk me down and treat me unfairly. If they do, yes it can upset me but I like to let them realise that they are in the wrong and should not treat others the same. They would not like it if it was them, people need to learn where the line is between joking and knocking people down.

Huge rant over! I just thought that some of you would appreciate this post and even have some experiences to share 🙂

You need Star Wars Battlefront!

Are you a huge Star Wars fan? Or even just a general lover? Star Wars Battlefront is definitely the best video game for the season this year, hands down!
Star Wars Battlefront is the latest craze from EA which is an action game that is either first person or third. You can play as classic characters such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, Boba Fett, Palpatine or even the man, Darth Vader himself!
It is seen as a reboot from previous Battlefront games, but the graphics and the recreation of scenes from the older games is just mindblowingly beautiful!

ogimage.imgfeaturedImage.img

I jumped onto my Xbox One and headed to the store to download the Battlefront BETA straight after work in November and I was not disappointed from what I saw. This took my breath away instantly – from the fact that I could play as Emperor Palpatine to defeat the rebels in a VS match to riding a speeder bike through Endor or even driving AT-ATs and X-Wings.

rendition1.img

I would personally say that this game is 90% Online Play to get the most out of the gaming experience, but they do have a few missions and lessons that you can play by yourself where you have to defeat Boba Fett and protect your pods.

Like I said at the beginning, if you love the original trilogy, you will probably fall in love with this game. Travel to Hoth, Endor, Tattooine and fulfil your Star Wars dreams in an instant! The detail that has been put into this game is incredible – although people sometimes describe this simply as a Call Of Duty-esqe, shooter game with a Star Wars front it is still so much more than that for any Star Wars fan.

Why wouldn’t you want to run up to people and fry them to pieces with a lightsaber or force choke them? Also, there is a great achievement that you receive, if you get hit by an Ewok which made me laugh more than anticipated..

2916877-star_wars_battlefront_e3_screen_2___survival_mission_tatooine_wm

Have any of you play this game or are getting it for christmas? I think that this is an immaculate game which I will not tire of easily! It is perfectly timed with the fully blown Star Wars hype at the moment with the upcoming movie and I would recommend this for all ages, as there is no blood whatsoever in this – all friendly ‘shoot and disappear’ action.

May The Force Be With You,
Zoe

Armada by Ernest Cline Book Review

The time has finally come! Ernest Cline’s latest book ‘Armada’ has been released, and obviously I jumped at the second it was on my Kindle!

As quite a lot of people know now, his first book was called Ready Player One and it was a massive hit, that it’s now being made into a film by Steven Spielberg! It was about a corrupt, dystopian world that was so bad, people lived their lives via a life simulator. They went to school on it, had jobs there but when the creator died he left his life’s earnings for the person that would complete the game and challenges he created inside this world. So, I was very, very excited for this next book!

It is not on the same lines as the previous book, but it still has some similar mannerisms such as using references to popular video games and sci-fi films from the 80s.
This book is about a boy that is in school one day, when he looks out of the window and sees an alien spaceship in the sky but it looks very, very familiar to him – like out of one of his video games that he plays very regularly. He thinks that he is going crazy, but one day it returns and actually lands to take him somewhere..
I am not going to say any more about this book, as it would ruin the storyline! But it is a great read and I almost cried at one point, too!

You can get this book from Amazon, at this link: (Hardcover £9.09, Paperback £7.99 and Kindle Edition £6.02)
I would definitely recommend this book to any nerds and sci-fi fans out there! I’m even going to leave a link to Ready Player One here too! (Paperback £6.29, Kindle Edition £5.98)

Have any of you read this yet? Did you like it as much as Ready Player One, or better?
I personally love Ready Player One a lot more, and shot straight up into my ‘Favourite Books’ list!
xx

LOOK WHAT JUST DOWNLOADED ONTO MY KINDLE!

Yes, that’s right. The book that I have been counting down the days for, and irritating Ernest Cline (and my followers) on twitter for!
I cannot wait to get stuck into this book, I am way too excited as when I read Ready Player One (£5.98 Kindle Edition, £6.29 Paperback) a few years ago, it instantly shot up to my ‘favourite books’ pile! Definitely in my Top 3 so far!

I have heard that this one is based on Aliens and slight video games, compared to the last book which was an actual video game itself (the storyline).

You can find Armada here: CLICKEDY CLICK! (£9.09 Hardcover, £7.99 Paperback, £6.02 Kindle Edition).

Let the reading and coffee drinking commence!
Have any of you preordered this?!

WOW. This book blew me away! I have never read a book like this – as I am a rather nerdy girl, I was in my element; especially the references!

This book is basically about one of the world’s biggest game developer that has created a virtual world that people tend to live in, instead of their everyday lives (as their world is corrupting and becoming miserable). The game developer dies, once this has happens, there is a video posted on his website from the creator himself saying that he has built a game within the virtual world. The objective of the game is to proceed through several levels (if you can find the starting point), they will need to solve riddles and puzzles. The winner will win the creator’s entire will, which is valued of billions of dollars!

So this book is mainly about the journey of this one guy, trying to solve the riddles and levels within the game. I won’t tell you anymore about the book, as it’ll spoil it!

I couldn’t get over how much I enjoyed this book – I didn’t want to put it down, I was that engulfed in it. This is definitely one of my favourite books now, AND it has been revealed that it is being turned into a film adaptation!

Go and read this book!
